The Toy Storage |
Can I just start with, holy moly my daughter has alot of stuff. Wait.
ALOT of stuff. We are getting ready to move and over the last few months I have been systematically sorting, purging, and organizing. I confess I put off my sweet princess's room because of the shear VOLUME of things.
Doll things. Barbie things. Play food things. Books. Puzzles. Random treasures from beloved fast food empires. Where to begin?
Let me give you one hint. Letting the three year old "
help" is probably not the best way to start. Understand I am working from a deficit from the beginning!
We took everything out of her room (except furniture) and put it all in the living room. All of it. Oh my. That is alot of stuff. I purchased these lovely pink canvas bins from Target. Sigh. I love me some Target! I put post-it notes on them with general categories: Baby Things, Play Food, Play Dishes, Books, Puzzles & Games, Stuffed Animals, Misc. I then caught up on my tv shows will tossing stuff in the bins. I also had a bag for trash and a couple of big boxes to donate.
When all the sorting was done, I decided to make some little labels for the bins. I probably should have made pictures since my girl can't read yet, but I didn't. She is pretty smart so I am counting on her remembering which bin has what stuff in it until she can read. Ok, so the pretty labels are just for my enjoyment. :-)

Lovely Pink Labels |
I had picked up two kinds of scrapbook paper. One has a pink flowery print and the other is sparkly pink. I printed labels off the computer and cut around the edges. I placed these on top of the flowery paper and put that on top of the sparkly paper. To "seal" the label I just used plain old packing tape. Yep, packing tape! To adhere the labels to the cubes I used cable ties that you can buy cheap at any hardward store. I love how it turned out and now I am off to label the boys room!

The Toy Storage
(Two Labels Left to Finish!) |
As a side note, all the donated toys went to her daycare. She absolutely loved sharing her toys with her friends and showing them how everything works. Toys she has not played with in ages (if ever) are now very well loved by her friends. I got to thinking that these kids spend 8-10 hours a day in the same room looking at the same toys so they get really excited when even ONE new thing shows up. Now they have two big boxes of new things. My little girl didn't have a hard time "getting rid" of anything because she knew she was going to see them again at daycare. Everybody wins!
Looks great! It will be so nice to have purged before you move. then you are taking only those things of need, and value and to be treasured.
